Media release – FQC Unveils Modernised Spreadmark Code to Enhance Fertiliser Application Standards

The Fertiliser Quality Council (FQC) is proud to announce the launch of its updated Spreadmark Code—a modernised, more user-friendly framework aimed at improving the efficiency, accuracy, and environmental responsibility of fertiliser application across New Zealand.

This milestone follows two years of dedicated work by an industry-led working group, spearheaded by Project Lead Leo Fietje.

“The strong desire by industry to engage with both central and local government—to raise awareness, capture learnings, and promote confidence in the Code—was commendable,” says Fietje.

Enhancing the Spreadmark Scheme for a Changing Industry

The updated Spreadmark Code reflects significant advances in fertiliser application, incorporating current best practices and emerging technologies. Key improvements include:

  • Clearer, More Accessible Guidelines: The development of four standalone booklets alongside a comprehensive code document simplifies procedures for applicators and stakeholders.
  • Expanded Scope: The code now covers slurries, combined aerial and ground spreading, and certification for drone applications—ensuring it stays relevant to evolving farming practices.
  • Stronger Environmental Focus: The integration of the 4R nutrient stewardship principles (Right Product, Right Rate, Right Time, Right Place) promotes more sustainable and environmentally responsible use of fertiliser.
  • Improved Industry Communication: Fertiliser suppliers are encouraged to take greater responsibility for informing users about product contents and application best practices.

A Living Document for the Future

FQC Chairman Jim Galloway says the modernised code acknowledges the fast-changing nature of the agricultural sector.

“The new Spreadmark Code is designed to be a living, online resource that is regularly updated to reflect evolving industry needs and regulatory changes,” Galloway says.

“It offers assurance not only to applicators, but also to farmers and growers—who can be confident that by choosing a Spreadmark-registered applicator, their product is applied to the highest standard by skilled professionals.”

Industry and Regulatory Support

The revamped code has already received strong backing from regional councils and processors. Some councils are exploring ways to integrate it into their regulatory frameworks, while processors support the code’s alignment with industry values and growing consumer expectations.

Next Steps: Training and Implementation

With the updated framework in place, the next phase will focus on training and education. A series of industry workshops and training sessions will roll out over the coming months, ensuring operators and stakeholders are well equipped to adopt the new standards.

A Commitment to Precision and Sustainability

The Fertiliser Quality Council remains committed to raising the bar for fertiliser application across New Zealand. The modernised Spreadmark Code marks a significant step toward improved precision, industry accountability, and environmental stewardship.
